Aave Governance has recently become a hot topic within the <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>cryptocurrency community due to a controversial $10 million token purchase by Aave’s founder, Stani Kulechov. This acquisition has raised eyebrows, with accusations suggesting it was aimed at boosting his voting power in a critical governance proposal.

On a recent Wednesday, Robert Mullins, a strategist in decentralized finance (DeFi), voiced concerns in a post on X. He claimed that the purpose of Kulechov’s purchase was to enhance his voting power, potentially to vote for a proposal against the token holders’ best interests. Mullins stated, “This is a clear example of tokens not being equipped to adequately disincentivize governance attacks.”

Token Purchase Sparks Debate

Prominent <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>crypto user Sisyphus echoed these sentiments, suggesting that Kulechov might have sold “millions of dollars” worth of Aave (AAVE) tokens between 2021 and 2025, questioning the move’s economic rationale. This controversy unfolds as Aave token holders engage in debates about how governance power is wielded within one of DeFi’s largest protocols.

Critics argue that significant token purchases can substantially sway voting outcomes on high-stakes proposals, reigniting concerns over whether token-based governance adequately protects minority holders when founders or early insiders maintain substantial economic leverage.

Aave Governance Vote Backlash

A recent governance vote within Aave has sparked backlash. The proposal, which seeks to reclaim control of the protocol’s brand assets, was pushed to a snapshot vote despite ongoing discussions. It suggests that AAVE token holders should regain ownership of domains, social accounts, and intellectual property through a DAO-controlled legal structure.

Several stakeholders have disputed this decision, arguing that the proposal was prematurely escalated. Ernesto Boado, former Aave Labs CTO and the proposal’s author, asserted that the vote progressed without his consent, thereby compromising community trust.

Concentration of Voting Power in Aave DAO

Samuel McCulloch from USD.ai highlighted the concentration of voting power within the Aave DAO. In an X post, he described the Aave vote as “silly,” noting that a small group of large holders accounted for approximately half of the total voting weight. Snapshot data reveals that the top three voters alone control over 58% of the entire vote.

The top voter, identified as 0xEA0C…6B5A, possesses 27.06% of the voting power (333k AAVE), while the second-largest voter, aci.eth, holds 18.53% (228k AAVE). Cointelegraph reached out to Kulechov for comment, but no response was available by the time of publication.

This situation has raised significant questions about the fairness and effectiveness of token-based governance, especially when it pertains to protecting the interests of minority token holders.

Aave governance has recently been engulfed in a significant controversy involving CoW Swap fees. The issue has sparked intense debate within the Aave decentralized autonomous organization (DAO), which is responsible for overseeing the Aave decentralized finance (DeFi) protocol.

At the heart of this dispute is a disagreement between the Aave DAO and Aave Labs, the principal development entity for Aave products. The controversy centers around the allocation of fees from Aave’s recent integration with the decentralized exchange aggregator CoW Swap.

Aave Governance Faces Revenue Concerns

The issue was initially brought to light by pseudonymous Aave DAO member, EzR3aL. He pointed out that the fees generated from <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>crypto asset swaps via CoW Swap were being directed to a separate on-chain address, instead of the Aave DAO treasury. This address, reportedly, is under the control of Aave Labs.

EzR3aL questioned why the Aave DAO was not consulted before the fees were redirected and emphasized that the generated revenue rightfully belonged to the DAO. He estimated that another entity, rather than the Aave DAO, is receiving at least $200,000 per week in Ether, potentially totaling $10 million annually in revenue kept from the DAO.

Responses and Reactions

Aave Labs responded by stating that the front-end components for the website and application interfaces have always been managed by them. They also claimed responsibility for funding the development of the “adapters” — the code that facilitates swaps and integrations.

Despite this, the response from Aave Labs has not alleviated tensions. Several DAO members argue that since the Aave DAO financed the original adapter technology, the resulting revenue should return to the DAO. Marc Zeller, founder of the Aave-Chan Initiative, described the decision to route fees solely to Aave Labs as “extremely concerning.”

Zeller criticized Aave Labs for allegedly redirecting Aave user volume towards competition in pursuit of their own monetization efforts, labeling such actions as “unacceptable.”

Implications for Aave Governance

This ongoing conflict underscores the complexities inherent in managing a DAO. While DAOs offer innovative governance and organizational structures, they also introduce unique challenges compared to traditional business models. The transparency and consensus-driven decision-making processes in DAOs can sometimes lead to prolonged disputes.

As the Aave governance community continues to navigate this controversy, the outcome could have significant implications for the future of decentralized governance and revenue distribution models within the DeFi sector.

Cointelegraph reached out to Aave Labs for further comments but did not receive a response by the time of publication.

In a remarkable turnaround, the decentralized finance (DeFi) sector has witnessed a DeFi fee rebound, climbing to an impressive $600 million in September. This marks a significant recovery from a year-low of $340 million in March, representing a 76% increase over six months. Leading this resurgence are key players like Uniswap, Aave, and Ethena, who have spearheaded this fee generation boom.

The rebound in fees signifies a noteworthy shift in the approach of protocols towards tokenomics. Moving away from the once-popular meme-centric strategies, protocols are now focusing on more traditional financial metrics, including buyback programs, to attract institutional investors. This trend suggests a maturing market, aligning more with conventional investment principles.

DeFi Fee Rebound: A New Era with Buyback Programs

Buyback programs have become a central strategy for many DeFi protocols, reflecting an effort to align with financial metrics familiar to traditional investors. As institutional participation in <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>crypto markets grows, these programs are gaining traction. Projects such as Ethena, Ether.fi, and Maple are also testing similar value-accrual mechanisms, indicating a broader trend across the DeFi landscape.

This move marks a departure from the narratives that dominated the market towards the end of 2024, where the focus was on memes and viral marketing. Instead, there is now a greater emphasis on generating fundamental revenue, which is attracting more serious investors.

Understanding the Impact of Buyback Programs

While buybacks and revenue sharing draw parallels with traditional finance, it’s important to differentiate <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>crypto tokens from equity securities. Tokens in the DeFi space serve multiple purposes beyond just value accrual, including governance rights, protocol access, and network utility.

As more protocols adopt revenue-based tokenomics, the market may be entering a phase where fundamental metrics play a more significant role in valuation compared to previous cycles. This development could signal a more stable and mature phase for the DeFi ecosystem.

This insight into the DeFi fee rebound and the adoption of buyback programs provides a glimpse into the evolving landscape of decentralized finance, where traditional financial principles are increasingly being integrated.

As the DeFi sector continues to grow and innovate, the adoption of these strategies could play a crucial role in shaping its future, attracting both individual and institutional investors.

News/Cointelegraph/ Ethereum Predicted to Face Instability Due to Potential ‘Significant Unwind’ – Crypto Expert

Ethereum’s (ETH) future seems uncertain with possible instability looming, says Markus Thielen, 10x Research head of research. He points to increased borrowing costs of the tokenized version of ETH – wrapped Ether (wETH), widely utilized in decentralized finance (DeFi) platforms, and technical indications of overvaluation as contributing factors to this projection.

Thielen expressed his concerns to Cointelegraph, stating, “In the near term, we perceive Ethereum to be at risk. As we enter a quieter summer phase, especially in the US in August, technical indicators are remaining deeply overbought.”

The rise in the funding rate has made wETH “less appealing” as Thielen indicates. A growing risk for Ethereum’s price is the dwindling profit potential from borrowing wETH. As of now, Ethereum trades at $3,623, marking a 49% rise over the past 30 days as per Nansen.

Thielen’s Wednesday market report revealed that the usage of lending platform Aave (AAVE) has seen an uptick from 86% to 95% since July 8, outpacing the available supply in the lending pool. He further elucidated, “The variable borrowing cost of wETH has escalated, making ETH borrowing unprofitable. As a result, we could see more unwinding by those who have borrowed ETH on Aave.”

If the current situation continues, Thielen warns it could incite significant unwinding, particularly with stretched funding rates and positioning. Despite short-term challenges, Thielen remains positive about Ethereum’s prospects post-September.

Statistics show that Q3 is generally the second weakest quarter for Ethereum, with an average return of 8.19% since 2013. However, Q4 usually yields the highest return, averaging 22.59%, according to CoinGlass data.

News/NewsBTC/ The price of AAVE has had a rollercoaster week, beginning with a bearish dip under $300 and then showing robust recovery signs, hitting a high of $340 on January 31st. The DeFi coin’s latest price setup indicates that it could be one of the top performers in the <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>crypto market this February. However, a <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>crypto analyst has cautioned that the journey may not be completely smooth for AAVE’s price in the coming months.

Prominent <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>crypto trader Ali Martinez recently shared an optimistic bullish projection for AAVE’s price on the X platform. According to his analysis, the DeFi coin could potentially experience an over 6,400% rally before the end of this current cycle.

This bullish forecast is based on the movement of AAVE’s price around a TD (Tom Demark) Sequential resistance trendline. The TD Sequential indicator is a technical analysis tool that identifies trend exhaustion and price reversal times for a specific token.

In 2020, AAVE’s price broke through the TD Sequential resistance trendline, which was followed by a 6,400% rally, leading AAVE to reach its current all-time high price of $661 in 2021. Currently, AAVE’s price is testing a similar resistance trendline around the $350 level on its monthly chart. If the price successfully breaks through this resistance zone and history repeats itself, AAVE could see a move to $3,500.

At the time of writing, AAVE’s price is around $337, reflecting nearly a 7% increase in the past 24 hours. According to CoinGecko data, the altcoin has dropped by 1% in the last seven days. AAVE’s future seems incredibly bullish, but there are specific hurdles the DeFi coin might need to address sooner than later. Martinez noted in a separate post on X that AAVE’s price faces two key resistance zones at $243 and $365. Breaking these supply barriers is crucial for AAVE’s bullish breakout and a potential run to a new all-time high.

Tokenized cash deposits from JPMorgan have been traded on the Polygon blockchain, marking the latest example of a major bank entering the DeFi market.

The transaction was executed as part of Project Guardian, a trial program launched in May by the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS). Using the <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>crypto lending protocol Aave and the decentralized exchange (DEX) Uniswap, the tokenization project successfully concluded testing for FX and the trading of government bonds.

Participating in the pilot program were the Singaporean DBS Bank, the Japanese SBI Digital, the Singapore Exchange’s digital asset platform Marketnode, and Temasek, in addition to JPMorgan’s Onyx, the bank’s blockchain business for wholesale payments.

Onyx successfully tokenized Singapore <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>Dollar (SGD) deposits, while SBI Digital Assets tokenized Japanese Yen (JPY) assets, both of which may be used in foreign exchange operations.

There are three private blockchains that JPMorgan’s companies and customers utilize on a daily basis, so this public transaction is a big deal for the bank.

Through its Liink network of banks, the bank distributes transaction data and associated insights. Through its Coin Systems network, the bank allows the transfer of the <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>dollar and other fiat currencies over a blockchain. Through its Onyx Digital Assets platform, conventional assets like US Treasuries and money market products may be tokenized.

The blockchain deal was hailed as a tremendous step forward for DeFi by Aave Companies’ CEO, Stani Kulechov.

According to Kulechov, the world has witnessed its first real-world use case for institutional-grade DeFi protocols with the deployment of a liquidity market on the Polygon mainnet for providing and borrowing tokenized foreign exchange transactions using the Aave protocol.

Polygon was selected for the deal, according to a tweet by Lobban. It was because the company needs affordable gas expenses to run on Ethereum.

The group used a permissioned version of the famous DeFi lending protocol that complies with AML standards and created their own version, which they then distributed to the Polygon network. As a result, financial institutions were given the freedom to establish their unique standards for conducting transactions.

JPMorgan has developed on-chain verification of verifiable credentials (VC) to enable regulation-compliant use of Aave and other DeFi protocols. The goal was to get rid of the necessity for DeFi entry points to perform KYC checks.
