The escalation of AI technology has led to an alarming rise in AI-powered frauds. Bitget’s 2025 Anti-Scam Month Research Report, co-authored with SlowMist and Elliptic, reveals that 87 deepfake scam rings were dismantled across Asia in the first quarter of 2025, highlighting the increasing threat of AI-based scams in the <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>crypto sphere.

The report also showed a 24% increase in global <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>crypto scam losses from the previous year, totaling $4.6 billion in 2024. Approximately 40% of major fraud cases involved deepfake technologies, with fraudsters increasingly leveraging sophisticated imitations of public figures and platform executives to trick users.

Bitget CEO, Gracy, spoke to Cointelegraph: “The ability of scammers to quickly generate synthetic videos, combined with the viral power of social media, gives deepfakes a unique edge in terms of scope and credibility.”

Combatting AI-driven scams requires more than technology. It demands a paradigm shift in attitudes, particularly in an era where synthetic media such as deepfakes can convincingly replicate real individuals and scenarios. Trust must be judiciously gained via transparency, continuous scrutiny, and thorough verification at every step.

The report breaks down contemporary <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>crypto scams into three main categories: AI-produced deepfake impersonations, social engineering tactics, and Ponzi-like frauds masquerading as DeFi or GameFi projects. Deepfakes are particularly nefarious, with AI mimicking text, voice messages, facial expressions, and even behaviors.

For instance, fraudsters have used fake video endorsements from public figures like Singapore’s Prime Minister and Elon Musk to gain public trust. AI can also simulate real-time reactions, making these scams progressively harder to differentiate from reality.

As these AI-enabled scams become more complex, users and platforms must devise new strategies to stay safe. Regular security training and robust technical defenses are key for institutions. Gracy advises users to “verify, isolate, and slow down,” emphasizing the importance of verification through official websites or trusted social media accounts.

Spanish authorities have apprehended six individuals behind an elaborate <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>cryptocurrency fraud that netted more than €19 million ($20.5 million). This daring fraud involved AI-generated deepfake endorsements by celebrities and managed to deceive the same victims thrice over.

The joint effort by Spain’s National Police and Civil Guard resulted in arrests in the provinces of Granada and Alicante, just as the alleged mastermind was planning a getaway to Dubai. The suspects, ranging in age from 34 to 57, are now facing charges of fraud, money laundering, and document forgery.

The fraudsters didn’t stop at a single scam. After initially swindling victims with bogus investment schemes, they later posed as recovery agents, offering to retrieve the stolen funds for a fee. They then made a third approach, impersonating Europol agents claiming “tax payments” were required to release the supposedly recovered money.

A total of 208 fraud crimes have been identified during the investigation, and over €100,000 of the stolen money has been temporarily frozen, according to the Spanish police.

The complex scam began with AI-manipulated advertisements featuring popular Spanish personalities endorsing “risk-free” <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>cryptocurrency investments with incredible returns. Targeting specific victim profiles, the scammers initially delivered small profits to gain trust. However, when victims tried to cash out larger investments, they faced problems.

Victims were contacted again by the fraudsters, who claimed the money was blocked but could be recovered with an additional deposit. In a final twist, the victims were contacted by someone posing as a Europol agent or UK lawyer claiming to have “recovered” their money, but taxes needed to be paid before the funds could be released.

The biggest victim from Granada lost €624,000 through this multi-layered deception, which initiated the investigation over two years ago.

The fraudsters went to great lengths to hide their identities and launder their stolen money, using more than 50 different personas and establishing a network of shell companies throughout Spain.

The scammers used AI technology to create convincing deepfake videos of celebrities endorsing the fraudulent investment platforms, making this scam particularly effective. So far, only about €100,000 of the stolen funds have been blocked, a minute portion of the €19 million stolen from 208 victims.

The investigation is ongoing, with more suspects identified in other countries. Spanish police are urging the public to exercise extreme caution with investment opportunities, especially those featuring celebrity endorsements or promising guaranteed returns.

The rise of AI-driven <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>crypto crimes marks a new era of <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>cyber threats, with an Elliptic report exposing how advanced technologies are being exploited for deepfake scams, state-sponsored attacks, and other sophisticated illicit activities.

Dark Web Advertisement

The report cites a troubling advertisement for an unethical GPT on the dark web, which claims, “AI has two faces just like humans.” This duality is further seen in the WormGPT advertisement highlighted in the report: “Embrace the dark symphony of code, where rules cease to exist, and the only limit is your imagination. Together, we navigate the shadows of cyberspace, ready to conquer new frontiers. What’s your next move?”

Deepfake Deceptions

Elliptic revealed that deepfake videos featuring Elon Musk and former Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong are being used to promote fraudulent investment schemes. Doctored videos or deepfakes of notable individuals promoting investment scams have targeted the likenesses of Elon Musk, former Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, and both the 7th and 8th presidents of Taiwan, Tsai Ing-wen and Lai Ching-te.

Growing Concerns and AI Misuse

According to the report, Anne Neuberger, the U.S. Deputy National Security Advisor for <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>Cyber and Emerging Technologies, also addressed the growing concerns about AI criminality. Neuberger warned that AI is being misused for purposes other than everyday scams. Some North Korean and other nation-state and criminal actors have been observed trying to use AI models to accelerate the creation of malicious software and identify vulnerable systems.

Dark Web Activity

The report elaborates on the extent of AI’s misuse, which can be observed on dark web forums. Throughout numerous dark web cybercrime forums, Elliptic has identified chatter that explores the use of large language models (LLMs) to reverse-engineer <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>crypto wallet seed phrases, bypass authentication for services such as OnlyFans, and provide alternatives to image-undressing manipulation services like DeepNude.

As activity on the dark web increases, so does the potential for downfall. This is evidenced by the recent arrest of a dark web market owner in New York on May 18. The 23-year-old man was charged with owning, running, and profiting from a $100 million dark web narcotics marketplace after the FBI tracked his <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>crypto transfers.

AI-Driven <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>Crypto Crime: Only Just Beginning

The report highlights that the misuse of AI in <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>crypto crimes is just beginning, with potential for more sophisticated and widespread attacks in the future.
