The United States Department of Justice’s recent $400 million <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>crypto forfeiture from the Helix <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>Bitcoin mixer marks a significant milestone in digital asset regulation. This case underscores the complexities and enduring nature of legal actions in the <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>cryptocurrency domain.

Helix <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>Bitcoin Mixer: A Darknet Tool

Helix, operational between 2014 and 2017, was designed to obscure the origins and destinations of <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>Bitcoin, mainly facilitating transactions on darknet markets. According to the DOJ, Helix processed at least 354,468 <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>Bitcoin, valued at approximately $300 million during those years. The operation was intricately linked to illegal activities, primarily money laundering for darknet drug markets.

Legal Proceedings and Forfeiture Details

The DOJ’s recent action follows a January 21 order from the US District Court for the District of Columbia, granting the government ownership of the seized assets. This legal transfer includes digital assets, real estate, and financial instruments associated with Helix’s operations. The forfeiture of over $400 million highlights the extensive efforts required to resolve crypto-related legal challenges.

Implications for <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>Cryptocurrency Regulation

The Helix case is not only a landmark in early <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>Bitcoin mixer prosecutions but also a testament to the DOJ’s commitment to pursuing digital currency-related crimes. Larry Harmon, Helix’s operator, was arrested in February 2020 and later pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit money laundering. His cooperation with investigators, including testimony in the <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>Bitcoin Fog case, was pivotal in unraveling the complexities of these illicit activities.

As the DOJ continues to tighten regulations around digital currencies, cases like Helix serve as cautionary tales for those attempting to exploit the anonymity of cryptocurrencies for illegal purposes.

The <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>crypto community must stay vigilant, understanding that enforcement actions, though lengthy, can have significant implications for the industry’s evolution and regulatory landscape.

US Senators Question DOJ <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>Crypto Unit Shutdown

In a significant development, six US senators have raised concerns over the decision to disband the Department of Justice’s (DOJ) <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>crypto enforcement team. This DOJ <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>crypto unit, crucial for overseeing digital asset regulations, was shut down in April 2025, shortly after Donald Trump took office. The senators have focused on potential conflicts of interest involving Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who was instrumental in the decision.

Conflict of Interest Concerns

Senators Mazie K. Hirono, Elizabeth Warren, Richard Durbin, Sheldon Whitehouse, Christopher A. Coons, and Richard Blumenthal have questioned Blanche’s motivations. At the time of the shutdown, Blanche reportedly held significant <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>cryptocurrency assets, valued between $158,000 and $470,000, primarily in <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>Bitcoin and Ethereum. This raises potential conflicts of interest, according to the senators.

The DOJ <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>crypto unit played a critical role in major investigations, including a high-profile probe into Binance and its founder Changpeng Zhao, who admitted to violating anti-money laundering laws in 2023. The senators argue that Blanche’s decision undermines the DOJ’s ability to combat crypto-related crimes.

Implications of the Shutdown

The senators have expressed concerns that the shutdown could facilitate illicit activities, such as sanctions evasion and drug trafficking. According to TRM Labs, 2025 saw a record $158 billion in crypto-related crime, a 145% increase from the previous year. The DOJ <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>crypto unit’s absence might exacerbate these trends.

Senators have previously criticized the decision, labeling it a ‘grave mistake.’ They argue that the DOJ’s withdrawal from active enforcement sends a dangerous signal to bad actors exploiting cryptocurrencies for criminal purposes.

Future of <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>Crypto Regulation

As <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>cryptocurrency continues to evolve, the role of regulatory bodies like the DOJ remains crucial. The senators’ queries highlight the need for transparent and effective oversight to prevent misuse of digital assets. With substantial amounts of <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>cryptocurrency involved, the scrutiny around the DOJ <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>crypto unit’s shutdown is likely to continue.

As this situation unfolds, stakeholders in the <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>crypto industry will be keenly watching how regulatory frameworks adapt to these evolving challenges.

The North Korean hackers have once again made headlines with their audacious infiltration into U.S. companies, leading to a significant $15 million <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>USDT theft. The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has taken decisive action to recover these stolen funds and has secured guilty pleas from multiple individuals involved in this elaborate scheme.

A Closer Look at the <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>USDT Theft

In a move to safeguard the interests of affected companies, the DOJ has filed civil forfeiture complaints to reclaim $15.1 million in Tether’s <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>USDT, which was illicitly obtained by North Korean hackers in 2023. These funds were traced back to Advanced Persistent Threat 38 (APT38), a notorious North Korean hacking group responsible for several high-profile <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>cryptocurrency heists.

The funds were seized by the FBI in March 2025, and the DOJ is now seeking court approval to return the assets to their rightful owners. Although the specific incidents are not elaborated upon, the circumstantial evidence points to a series of hacks, including the $100 million theft from Poloniex in November 2023, the $37 million hack of CoinsPaid in July 2023, and the $60 million attack on Alphapo, among others.

How U.S. Citizens Facilitated the Breach

The DOJ revealed that four U.S. citizens and one Ukrainian national played a pivotal role in assisting North Korean hackers. These individuals, including Audricus Phagnasay, Jason Salazar, Alexander Paul Travis, and Erick Ntekereze Prince, admitted to wire fraud conspiracy. They provided their identities to the hackers and hosted company laptops at their residences, creating the illusion that these workers were based in the United States. Ukrainian national Oleksandr Didenko also pleaded guilty to similar charges.

These schemes allowed North Korean IT workers to fraudulently secure employment at over 136 U.S. companies, generating more than $2.2 million in revenue for North Korea. This operation resulted in the theft of identities from over 18 U.S. citizens, further highlighting the extensive reach of these cybercriminal activities.

Implications and Ongoing Efforts

The DOJ continues to trace and seize stolen virtual currencies as North Korean hackers persist in laundering funds through various channels like virtual currency bridges and exchanges. The regime’s reliance on <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>cryptocurrency theft, alongside remote IT worker schemes, represents a significant violation of international sanctions.

In 2025 alone, North Korean hackers have amassed over $2 billion in <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>cryptocurrency, according to an analysis by Elliptic. This positions the regime as one of the most prolific players in global <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>crypto theft operations.

The DOJ’s actions underscore the ongoing threat posed by North Korean <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>cyber activities and the critical importance of international cooperation to combat such threats effectively. As the digital landscape continues to evolve, robust security measures and vigilant monitoring remain essential to safeguarding against these sophisticated cybercrimes.

Dragonfly Capital, an early investor in Tornado Cash’s developer PepperSec, Inc., is potentially facing federal charges. However, the venture firm is ready to “vigorously defend” itself if the prosecutors decide to move forward with the case.

In a recent social media update, the managing partner of Dragonfly Capital, Haseeb Qureshi, reiterated the company’s support for Tornado Cash. Tornado Cash is an open-source protocol enabling users to conceal blockchain transactions. Dragonfly Capital’s investment in this technology goes back to August 2020.

“Our investment was driven by our belief in the significance of open-source privacy-preserving technology,” Qureshi stated. He mentioned that they had sought legal advice before investing and were informed that Tornado Cash was compliant.

However, despite the legal assurance, Tornado Cash developers Roman Storm and Roman Semenov were accused of money laundering and sanctions violations by the US Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York in August 2023. Storm is currently facing a trial in New York, where he may encounter federal charges leading to over 40 years in prison.

On Friday, the prosecutors hinted at the possibility of charging Dragonfly for its investment in Tornado Cash five years ago. “We consider the government’s statement in court today to be primarily aimed at weakening a defense of Tornado Cash,” Qureshi commented. He called the idea of pressing charges after such a long period, “outrageous.”

He further emphasized, “We don’t anticipate that the DOJ would actually press such absurd and baseless charges. But if they do, we are ready to defend ourselves strongly.”

Tornado Cash developers positioned the platform as a decentralized, non-custodial privacy tool that allowed users to transact digital assets without exposing their wallet history. Yet, prosecutors argue against this claim.

In 2022, the US Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) imposed sanctions on Tornado Cash. The tool was accused of enabling money laundering, supporting cybercrime, threatening national security, and concealing illegal transactions. Despite sanctions and criminal investigations, Tornado Cash witnessed a comeback in 2024, as evidenced by $1.9 billion in deposits during the first half of the year, according to data from Flipside Crypto.

In a series of filings submitted just before the scheduled July 14 trial of Roman Storm, co-founder of the Tornado Cash mixing protocol, Storm’s defense has raised objections that prosecutors from the Southern District of New York utilized a wrongly attributed quote to demonstrate the Tornado team’s alleged ‘consciousness of guilt.’

The contention revolves around Telegram messages obtained from Dutch authorities consequent to their prosecution of Tornado Cash developer Alexey Pertsev, who was sentenced to 64 months in prison by a Dutch court for enabling money laundering via Tornado Cash.

A specific message states, “Heya, anyone around to chat about axie? Would like to ask a few general questions about how one goes about cashing out 600 mil.” This message was referenced by Assistant U.S. Attorney Ben Arad during a July 8 hearing as an indication of the co-founders’ alleged guilt, as per the hearing’s transcript.

However, Storm’s legal team has presented filings indicating that the message was initially penned by Andrew Thurman, a senior tech reporter at CoinDesk, and later forwarded to a separate Tornado Cash chat by Pertsev.

The defense’s filing suggests that the government mistakenly credited the reporter’s Telegram message to Pertsev at the pretrial conference, implying that the government was also oblivious to this issue until the defense brought it up.

In response, the prosecutors acknowledged their initial extraction of the text messages, provided to the defense in September 2023, lacked the “forwarded” tag on forwarded messages, which resulted in the confusion. However, they asserted that they furnished the corrected version to the defense in December 2024, which is the version they plan to use at the trial.

Storm’s defense countered the accusation that they strategically delayed their motion until the last moment. They cited the misattributed quote as part of their argument for dismissing all Telegram chat evidence from Pertsev’s phone from the trial, and requested to examine grand jury transcripts, voicing “grave concerns about the integrity of the grand jury proceedings” due to the possibility of the government providing false information to the grand jury.

The prosecutors, in their reply, expressed regret for initially producing the messages without the forwarding information, but asked the judge to reject the defense’s motion to exclude the evidence.

U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro revealed on Wednesday that her office has lodged a complaint to reclaim 40,353 <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>USDT (Tether) on Ethereum, which were obtained through an alleged business email compromise scam. The scam is said to have impersonated the Trump-Vance Inaugural Committee.

The accusation alleges that fraudsters, presenting themselves as the Trump-Vance Inaugural Committee, deceived a benefactor into donating a total of $250,300 in <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>cryptocurrency. The scammers then laundered the proceeds through various wallets. With the help of onchain analysis and the issuers of the stablecoin, Tether, the FBI was able to track and confiscate $40,353 of the funds. The complaint now seeks to return these funds to the victim through civil forfeiture.

The complaint details that on December 24, 2024, a fraudster in Nigeria, posing as Trump-Vance Inaugural Co-Chair Steve Witkoff, sent emails to victims from a deceptive email address (@t47lnaugural.com), swapping the “i” in the legitimate email address for a lowercase “l,” directing them to send funds to a <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>crypto wallet ending in 58c52. A victim, believing the email to be authentic, sent $250,300 worth of <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>USDT on Ethereum two days later.

“All donors should double and triple check that they are sending <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>cryptocurrency to their intended recipient. It can be extremely difficult for law enforcement to recoup lost funds due to the extremely complex nature of the blockchain,” Pirro said. “Nevertheless, my office and our law enforcement partners stand ready to go toe-to-toe with criminals and make victims whole.”

“Impersonation scams take many forms and cost Americans billions in losses each year,” said Assistant Director in Charge Steven J. Jensen of the FBI Washington Field Office, which is investigating the case. “To avoid becoming a victim, carefully review email addresses, website URLs, and spelling in any messages you receive. Scammers often use subtle differences to deceive you and gain your trust. Never send money, gift cards, <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>cryptocurrency, or other assets to people you do not know personally or have only interacted with online or over the phone.”

The DOJ encourages anyone who believes they’ve been a victim of cybercrime — such as business email compromise, <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>cryptocurrency, romance, investment, or “pig butchering” scams — to report it to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center.

Last month, the DOJ acknowledged Tether and <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>crypto exchange Coinbase for assisting the U.S. Secret Service in seizing about $225 million in <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>cryptocurrency tied to separate alleged schemes dating back to 2023 — the largest <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>crypto seizure in the agency’s history.

The US Department of Justice (DOJ) has reported that a <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>crypto company’s executive has been apprehended in New York on charges of using his <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>cryptocurrency firm, Evita Pay, as a concealed conduit for illicit money. Iurii Gugnin, the accused, purportedly facilitated the transfer of approximately $530 million from Russian banks under sanctions into the US with the intent of assisting Russians in procuring sensitive American technology.

On Monday, the DOJ slapped Gugnin with a 22-count indictment, with charges ranging from wire and bank fraud, money laundering, to operating an unlicensed money transmitting business, among other accusations. If found guilty, Gugnin could potentially be sentenced to life imprisonment. This case adds to a growing list of instances where cryptocurrencies have been used to skirt sanctions and launder money.

The DOJ asserts that from June 2023 to January 2025, Gugnin masterminded an extensive money laundering operation, processing Tether USDTUSD transactions for Russian clients connected to sanctioned banks such as Sberbank, VTB, Sovcombank, and Tinkoff. John A. Eisenberg, assistant attorney general for national security, stated that Gugnin transformed his <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>crypto business into a “secret conduit for illicit money,” channeling around $530 million through the US financial system to aid sanctioned Russian banks and assist Russian consumers in procuring sensitive American technologies.

According to the DOJ, Gugnin misled US banks about Evita’s Russian connections, manipulated invoices to conceal client identities, and disregarded Anti-Money Laundering regulations, despite having registered Evita Pay as a money transmitting business in Florida using false declarations. The DOJ reached out to Evita Pay for comments, but none were immediately forthcoming.

Furthermore, the DOJ claims that Gugnin conducted online searches such as “Am I being investigated” and “signs you may be under criminal investigation,” suggesting that he was aware of his illegal activities. Gugnin now faces a potential 30-year prison sentence for each count of bank fraud, up to 20 years for each wire fraud count, and up to 10 years for failing to implement an effective Anti-Money Laundering program and failure to file suspicious activity reports. Conspiracy to defraud the US could add an additional five years to his sentence.

Binance’s founder, Changpeng “CZ” Zhao, has publicly disputed a Wall Street Journal (WSJ) report alleging that he provided damning evidence against TRON’s head, Justin Sun, to U.S. prosecutors as part of a plea deal, referencing unnamed sources.

“The WSJ is stretching the truth,” CZ commented on a social media platform, responding to the report. He insinuated, without providing proof, that the article might be a part of a character assassination campaign. “Government informants do not end up in prison. They receive protection…I suspect someone bribed WSJ staff to tarnish my reputation,” he added.

Similarly, Sun dismissed the report, describing CZ as “a mentor and close friend.” He applauded the U.S Department of Justice’s partnership with the T3 Financial Crime Unit, a private collaboration between TRON, Tether, and TRM Labs, committed to halting the unlawful use of Tether’s <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>USDT stablecoin on the TRON blockchain.

After admitting to violating the Bank Secrecy Act due to the lack of an efficient anti-money laundering protocol at Binance, CZ served a four-month sentence. This was a notable decrease from the three-year sentence initially proposed by prosecutors.

Although CZ claims that “government informants do not end up in prison,” this is not always true. For instance, ex-Alameda Research CEO, Caroline Ellison, who pleaded guilty to charges carrying a maximum penalty of 110 years in prison, was eventually given a two-year sentence after testifying against FTX CEO Sam Bankman-Fried in his criminal trial. Bankman-Fried was subsequently sentenced to 25 years.

The WSJ report also revealed that Binance executives met with Treasury Department officials last month, aiming to eliminate the U.S. monitor overseeing the exchange’s compliance with anti-money laundering regulations.

According to the report, Binance is optimistic about lifting the latter monitorship. The report further claims that Binance is in discussions with the Trump-backed <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>crypto project, World Liberty Financial, to list its new USD1 stablecoin.

The WSJ also previously reported that CZ is seeking a pardon from President Trump, a claim that CZ has also downplayed without outright denying.

Binance’s associated BNB token has seen a slight increase of about 1% in the past 24 hours, as per The Block’s BNB Price page. The SEC and Binance recently requested another 60-day pause in their ongoing legal dispute, separate from the resolved Department of Justice case.

In a dramatic turn of events, the <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>crypto world has been rocked by the recent upheaval at Binance, one of the largest <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>cryptocurrency exchanges globally. The departure of CEO Changpeng “CZ” Zhao and the ensuing legal developments have sent shockwaves through the market, culminating in a staggering liquidation of nearly $175 million in <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>crypto long positions.

The Ripple Effect of Binance’s Latest Developments

The <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>crypto community was taken aback as news broke out about CZ’s decision to plead guilty to violating Anti-Money Laundering requirements, leading to his resignation as Binance’s CEO. This development, coupled with the U.S. Department of Justice’s announcement of a hefty $4.3 billion settlement with Binance, has caused significant market turbulence.

Market Liquidation: A Deep Dive into the Numbers

The impact of these events on the <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>crypto market has been profound. According to CoinGlass, a <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>crypto derivatives data platform, the market witnessed the liquidation of $175 million worth of <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>crypto longs in just 24 hours. In contrast, $51 million in short positions were also purged. This massive liquidation affected 92,742 traders, with the largest single order, worth approximately $2.35 million, occurring on the BTCUSD pair on the Bybit exchange.

Binance’s Asset Flow and BNB’s Volatile Journey

The turmoil at Binance has not only affected market positions but also the flow of assets within the exchange. Data from DefiLlama indicates a significant drop in asset inflows to Binance, exceeding $1 billion in the last 24 hours.
