Florida’s leading legal authority has launched an inquiry into the trading platform Robinhood, suggesting that it has been erroneously advertising its <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>cryptocurrency offerings as the most affordable on the market.

Lucas Moskowitz, Robinhood’s chief legal officer, however, refuted these allegations in a statement to Cointelegraph, insisting that the platform is upfront about its charges, providing the cheapest average <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>cryptocurrency trading services for its users.

James Uthmeier, Florida’s Attorney General, accused Robinhood of contravening the Florida Deceptive and Unfair Practices Act in a statement released on Thursday. He also issued a subpoena requiring various documents from the platform. He emphasized that “<a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>Crypto is a pivotal component of Florida’s financial future,” and consumers should be ensured transparency in their transactions.

Robinhood has always maintained its position as the most economical option, but Uthmeier contends these claims are misleading. Robinhood’s website asserts that its traders can buy and sell cryptocurrencies at the lowest average cost in the US.

The Attorney General points out that Robinhood’s revenue model, which is based on payment for order flow (PFOF), makes the platform more costly since third parties paying Robinhood for order flow may need to quote less favorable prices to maintain profitability.

Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev defended the practice in a 2023 CNBC interview, despite concerns about potential conflicts of interest and brokers possibly not always acting in the best interest of clients.

In December 2020, Robinhood agreed to a $65 million fine, with no admission of guilt, to settle SEC allegations, including claims that Robinhood falsely stated its customers’ orders were executed at better prices than other brokers.

Speaking to Cointelegraph, Robinhood’s General Counsel Lucas Moskowitz claims that their “disclosures are best-in-class.” He added, “We are proud to be a place where customers can trade <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>crypto at the lowest cost on average.”

Despite the news of Florida’s investigation, Robinhood investors seemed unaffected, with the stock closing Thursday’s trading session up by 4.4% at $98.70 during a <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>crypto market rally, just short of its all-time high of $100.88.

Two teenagers from Pasco County, Florida, aged just 16, are facing 22 felony charges each, following their alleged involvement in a high-profile kidnapping and <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>cryptocurrency theft. The duo reportedly abducted a man following a crypto-related business event in Las Vegas in November.

The unfortunate victim was driven for an hour across the Arizona border to a remote desert location. The teens then allegedly forced him to relinquish access to his digital financial accounts, which led to the theft of NFTs and <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>cryptocurrency valued at a staggering $4 million.

A third accomplice, also a teenager, is currently facing charges but is reportedly no longer residing in the United States, as per the prosecutor’s statement. The first report of the case emerged from a Las Vegas local news outlet, 8newsnow.

Reports suggest that the teens may have received assistance from a person communicating with them over speakerphone. After the ordeal, the victim had to traverse five miles across the desert alone to reach a gas station and call a friend for help.

One of the 16-year-olds has engaged the services of renowned defense attorney Ross C. Goodman, as shown by Las Vegas court records. The other teen has sought the assistance of a public defender. No comments have been received from Goodman’s office yet.

This incident marks the latest in a worrying trend of violent crimes targeted at individuals with substantial <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>cryptocurrency holdings. Earlier this year, the co-founder of Ledger was kidnapped and tortured in France, with the criminals demanding a hefty <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>cryptocurrency ransom. Furthermore, a Canadian man was reportedly forced into hiding after being targeted for a kidnapping attempt due to his perceived <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>bitcoin wealth.

<a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>Bitcoin reserve bills have made significant strides in both New Hampshire and Florida. The House of New Hampshire and Florida’s House Insurance and Banking Committee have respectively pushed forward bills that would allow their states to establish <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>Bitcoin reserves.

The New Hampshire House gave the green light to its <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>Bitcoin reserve bill, HB302, with a 192-179 vote on April 10. The bill is now set to move to the Senate. This makes New Hampshire the fourth state, following Arizona, Texas, and Oklahoma, to advance a <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>Bitcoin reserve bill through one of its chambers.

If HB302 gets the approval of the New Hampshire Senate and receives the Governor’s signature, it would permit the state treasurer to <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>invest 10% of the state’s general fund and other designated funds in precious metals and certain digital assets. The bill outlines the criteria for these investments and their custody methods. It stipulates that only cryptocurrencies with a market cap exceeding $500 billion would be eligible for investment, a criterion currently met only by <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>Bitcoin.

In contrast to the support for the bill, Democrat Representative Terry Spahr argued that it was unnecessary and could potentially jeopardize the future security of the state’s digital asset reserves. However, Republican Representative Jordan Ulery defended the bill, citing its potential to generate significant revenue for the state.

Two other blockchain-related bills in New Hampshire, HB310 and HB 639, which deal with stablecoins, real-world asset tokenization (RWA), and blockchain regulation and dispute resolution, respectively, are also making their way through the legislature.

On the same day, the <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>Bitcoin reserve bill in Florida, HB487, received unanimous approval from the state’s House Insurance and Banking Committee. The bill, similar to New Hampshire’s, could allow the state’s chief financial officer and the State Board of Administration to <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>invest up to 10% of certain state funds in <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>Bitcoin.

Republican Representative Webster Barnaby, the bill’s sponsor, urged the Committee to support this “very important bill”, which he believes would put Florida at the forefront of this emerging technology. The bill also grants the state’s financial chief the option to <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>invest in digital assets directly, via certain qualified custodians, or through exchange-traded products (ETPs), and outlines the necessary security and custody requirements.

According to <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>Bitcoin Laws, which monitors the progress of digital asset legislation, Arizona is currently leading the charge to become the first US state to establish a strategic <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>Bitcoin reserve. As of March 24, two digital assets reserve bills, SB1373 and SB1025, have been approved by Arizona’s House Rules Committee and are now headed for a full floor vote in the state’s House.
