In a shocking incident, a trio of gamer-turned-hackers, including a 19-year-old named Veer Chetal, stole <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>Bitcoin worth $243 million using social engineering tactics. The theft left the <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>cryptocurrency community stunned when the identity of the youngest thief was revealed on a live stream.

According to court documents, the victim, a Gemini creditor, was fooled into believing that their account had been compromised. The scammers, posing as Google and Gemini support, persuaded the victim to reset their 2-factor authentication and transfer their Gemini funds to a compromised wallet. In the course of this scam, the victim’s <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>Bitcoin private key was also leaked through screen sharing via AnyDesk.

In a coordinated effort, Chetal accessed the victim’s Gmail and iCloud accounts, while another hacker, Malone Lam, searched for personal information. The third accomplice, Jeandiel Serrano, posed as a customer service representative. By the early hours of August 19, 2024, the hackers had successfully drained the victim’s wallet.

However, their triumph was short-lived. During the live stream, Chetal inadvertently leaked his name and was referred to as Veer by his accomplices. This, along with a series of other mistakes, led to their downfall and eventual arrest.

After the initial heist, the stolen <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>Bitcoin was traced to more than 15 different exchanges, where it was swapped multiple times between Litecoin (LTC), Ether (ETH), Monero (XMR), and <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>Bitcoin. Chetal’s lavish spending on luxury goods also helped trace the stolen wealth back to him.

In an unexpected twist, Chetal agreed to cooperate with authorities and testify against his co-conspirators. However, while out on bail, he was implicated in another social engineering scam involving a $2 million theft. This led to his re-arrest and the denial of his request for re-release on bond.

The Veer Chetal case serves as a stark reminder of the potential risks associated with <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>cryptocurrency and highlights the need for vigilant <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>cyber security practices.

Political figures like Donald Trump promoting memecoins, lenient regulations, and <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>cryptocurrency court cases dismissed by US authorities have ignited a <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>crypto “crime supercycle”, according to two blockchain crime researchers.

ZachXBT, a blockchain investigator, shared his observations on X last Thursday, noting that the potential for misuse in the <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>crypto world has always been significant. However, the situation has “markedly escalated since politicians introduced memecoins and multiple court cases were dismissed, further encouraging such misconduct.”

He stated that for defrauding their followers, <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>crypto influencers and key thought leaders face “absolutely no consequences.” ZachXBT continued, “In the current favorable environment, it has never been a worse time to engage in black hat, phishing, social engineering, and robbery activities as compared to gray hat activities.”

Slow regulatory advances are also part of the problem. The lack of enforcement on projects that fail to disclose paid advertisements and similar behavior has also fed into the supercycle, says ZachXBT.

He argued that if regulators had focused on managing this sector instead of pursuing open-source developers or blue-chip decentralized protocols, the current situation wouldn’t be so prevalent. The lack of repercussions has allowed these practices to flourish.

According to a report shared with Cointelegraph by cybersecurity firm Hacken, over $2 billion was lost to <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>crypto hacks in the first quarter of 2025. Phishing scams accounted for $96 million of this, while rug pulls were responsible for more than $300 million.

Taylor Monahan, another blockchain detective, joined the conversation, stating that as long as scammers are making significant profits, their behavior is unlikely to change. She believes that the <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>crypto industry is in a “difficult place” as it continues to attract and retain too many hackers and scammers.

She noted, “There are no social, financial, or legal obstacles or friction to this kind of behavior. Plus, it’s simply so easy and there’s so much instant money to be made.”

While some scammers are facing legal consequences, many continue to operate freely. The US Department of Justice recently announced the seizure of more than $225 million linked to <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>crypto investment scams by the Secret Service. Moreover, a New Zealand man was arrested in May for his alleged involvement in a global <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>crypto fraud operation that reportedly stole 450 million New Zealand dollars ($265 million).

BitMEX, a renowned <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>crypto exchange, has recently published an in-depth article on its blog, shedding light on the notorious exploits of North Korea’s Lazarus Group associated with recent attacks on its platform. The Lazarus Group is infamous for its persistent targeting of the <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>cryptocurrency sector, employing a wide range of deceptive techniques to defraud innocent <a class="lar-automated-link" href="https://accounts.binance.com/register?ref=42224911" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" 4536>crypto investors.

The group has set its sights on various exchanges, including Phemex and Bybit, and they even attempted to deceive a BitMEX staff member by proposing a bogus project as a disguise for a phishing attempt to implant harmful software on the staff member’s device. However, BitMEX is now retaliating by delving into the malevolent code deployed by the hacker group.

BitMEX has unearthed serious loopholes that exchanges can leverage to safeguard their assets. This includes revealing the group’s tracking databases and originating IP addresses, which allows BitMEX to monitor its functioning hours and single out key players crucial to the group’s operations.

The BitMEX team has distinguished different levels for the hackers, ranging from novice hackers performing phishing tasks to experts assigned to conduct post-exploitation procedures. The BitMEX blog post proposes various real-time security breach detection measures, including an internal monitoring system for identifying infections.

BitMEX’s sudden interest in cybersecurity stems from a Lazarus Group member reaching out to a BitMEX employee on LinkedIn with a proposition to participate in a counterfeit NFT project. This audacious phishing attempt prompted BitMEX to probe deeper into the matter, which resulted in a chance to analyze live Lazarus code.

BitMEX researchers uncovered a Lazarus Supabase, which contained data related to the malware, such as username, hostname, operating system, geolocation, timestamp, and IP address. With this data, BitMEX identified various devices as either a developer or test machine based on their operational frequency.

While most of the developers utilized VPNs to conceal their location, one developer made an error revealing the actual IP address of the machine, which is located in Jiaxing, China. BitMEX considers this a significant lapse that could potentially unveil the hacker’s identity.

BitMEX has now developed a script to automatically analyze the Supabase and search for operational errors. After all, even hackers are prone to mistakes, which can prove to be their downfall. BitMEX’s astute analysis of Lazarus Group’s operations will continue to enhance their cybersecurity measures and protect their platform.
