“The original intent of cryptocurrency was to return power to the people. Establishing an Irish Bitcoin reserve would empower the people’s money,” McGregor stated on May 9.

McGregor, who previously dominated the UFC, plans to expand on his Bitcoin reserve proposal during an upcoming online discussion. His comments have already attracted attention from key figures in the Bitcoin industry.

In response to Anthony Pompliano, host of The Pomp Podcast, McGregor tweeted, “We need the best minds for this Bitcoin Reserve initiative. Reach out to me and let’s talk in my space.”

David Bailey, one of the crypto advisors to former US President Donald Trump, also expressed interest, with McGregor inviting him to share his ideas.

McGregor declared his independent candidacy for the Irish presidency in late March 2025, with his campaign focusing on anti-immigration policies and crime reduction. The next presidential election in Ireland is due by November 11, 2025, when the term of the current President, Michael D. Higgins, will end.

However, establishing a Bitcoin reserve, especially from a minor, independent party, is not an easy task. Only a few countries, including the US, El Salvador, and Bhutan, have managed to create a Bitcoin reserve, despite recent regulatory advancements.

McGregor’s political prominence has been buoyed by a recent visit to the White House where he received an endorsement from Trump. However, McGregor is facing intense scrutiny in Ireland following a sexual assault conviction in a civil case, which he is currently appealing. He has also previously been investigated for hate speech crimes.

McGregor’s latest crypto project failed to generate the necessary funding in its token launch pre-sale, leading to a full refund to all token bidders. The project, Real World Gaming, raised only $392,315 over a 28-hour pre-sale on April 5 and 6, falling short of the $1 million minimum requirement.

The firm will now be able to legally operate out of Ireland and continue serving customers throughout Europe and beyond. Cormac Dinan, previously of Crypto.com, Deloitte, and Citi, has been named director of national operations for Coinbase.

Coinbase Europe Limited and Coinbase Custody International Limited are covered by this registration, making Coinbase Ireland a subject of the Criminal Justice Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing Act 2010. The former facilitates cryptocurrency trading; the latter offers secure storage for cryptocurrency.

The Irish Central Bank has previously approved Coinbase Ireland Limited to function as an EMI, enabling the firm to issue e-currency, provide e-payment services, and process e-payments on behalf of others.

As a member of the European Union with easy access to the rest of the continent, Ireland was an obvious choice as Coinbase’s European headquarters for several reasons. The v.p. of international and business development, Nana Murugesan, explained that for Coinbase, regulation was a facilitator for the development of the cryptocurrency business because it established clear ground rules that create an atmosphere that stimulates innovation and improves confidence in the sector.

By establishing regional offices in Ireland, the United Kingdom, and Germany, Coinbase can provide its services to consumers in over 40 European states. Several other markets are now processing further registrations or license applications.

The three new firms are Binance (APAC) Holdings, Binance (Services) Holdings, and Binance Technologies. By setting up these three new entities, the global crypto exchange is now trying to solidify its position in the European country. 

The ban on cryptocurrency and crypto investments in China has impacted many native crypto investment platforms and crypto exchanges in particular. While the UK has asked the crypto exchange to comply with local regulations, Singapore regulators have also issued their warnings. 

The challenges for cryptocurrency firms to operate in compliance with local regulations are consistently increasing. Global crypto investment platforms are finding it increasingly challenging due to ambiguous regulatory frameworks. As such, many exchanges including Binance are actively pursuing different routes to cater to multiple jurisdictions.

Paypal has already been very active in launching crypto-specific products. It has integrated crypto payments support on its payment app and is planning to allow crypto trading in the neighbouring UK. PayPal had earlier also launched Venmo which is a crypto payment platform. In a recent update, PayPal had also confirmed adding additional features including launching a super app wallet. 

According to local news outlets, PayPal is taking job applications for crypto-related posts and skills. However, they are currently focussing mainly on hiring employees for business development, anti-money laundering and compliance-related responsibilities. 

The number of people investing and using cryptocurrencies in Ireland and the UK has risen sharply. Many PayPal users are also active crypto investors and traders. As such PayPal is strategically offering them services customizing their products according to the localized requirements. 

As cryptocurrencies are becoming increasingly popular, top payment services providers (PSPs) don’t want to be left behind. Even payment processing giants like Visa and Master have been creating crypto-specific products for their users. Last month, Visa reported $1 billion worth of crypto transactions using their crypto card.
