Warren Buffett Refuses to Bet on Bitcoin and Crypto

Warren Buffett, who is the chairman and CEO of Berkshire Hathaway, has been vocal about his distrust in cryptocurrencies. He has called Bitcoin “rat poison squared,” and warned investors to stay away from investing in digital currencies. In an interview with CNBC, he stated that he doesn’t believe in investing in things he doesn’t understand, and Bitcoin is too complex for him to comprehend.

Despite the growing popularity of Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies, Warren Buffett remains steadfast in his belief that they are not a viable investment option. He believes that investing in stocks and bonds is a much safer bet than betting on digital currencies. Billionaire investor Warren Buffett has once again slammed Bitcoin, asserting he “wouldn’t take” all of the BTC in the world for just $25.

The 91-year-old, with a net worth of around $124 billion, is an avid crypto sceptic. He once called Bitcoin “rat poison squared.” His arguments often stem around digital assets offering no tangible value. Moreover, the community has been quick to highlight this occasion. There is a myriad of use cases and utility in crypto that Buffett likely hasn’t researched.

Buffett Is Again on His Crypto Bashing

Speaking at the Berkshire Hathaway Annual Shareholder meeting on April 30, Buffett commented on crypto in relation to the growing mainstream adoption of the sector. He noted that while he has no idea if the value of BTC will increase moving forward, he is sure that “it doesn’t produce anything.”

Buffett argued that he would happily write “a check this afternoon” worth $25 billion for 1% of all the farmland or “apartment houses” in the U.S. Further, they both produce real-world utility, but wouldn’t even spend $25 for 100% of the supply of Bitcoin:

“Now if you told me you own all of the Bitcoin in the world and you offered it to me for $25 I wouldn’t take it because what would I do with it? I’d have to sell it back to you one way or another. It isn’t going to do anything. The apartments are going to produce rent and the farms are going to produce food.”

“Assets, to have value, have to deliver something to somebody. And there’s only one currency that’s accepted,” he added.

Well-known crypto proponents were mocking Buffett’s comments on Twitter over the weekend.

Co-founder of top crypto venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) Marc Andreessen noted that “it’s so wild he says this stuff while nakedly shilling diabetes. This is in reference to an ensemble of See’s Candies boxes and soda cans on Buffett’s desk during the speech.

In response, Tesla CEO and Twitter owner Elon Musk said “haha he says ‘Bitcoin’ so many times.” While MicroStrategy CEO Michael Saylor chimed in that “everyone can’t stop talking about Bitcoin.”

Investment of $1 Billion in Bitcoin

Berkshire Hathaway, Buffett’s company had made the crypto investment public through the SEC filing. This filing has revealed that the company of Buffett has purchased about $1 billion in the shares of digital bank which is Brazil based named as Nubank, that is the biggest of their kind.

Nubank, that even known as neobank, is mainly a kind of bank which helps to operates outside from rules of traditional banking system. However, ‘crypto friendly’ and the investment unit of digital bank, NuInvest, permits the users to simply put money in the Bitcoin ETF or exchange-traded fund.

Astonishingly, the investment by in Bitcoin by Buffett’s company is not complete for first time. They have also dabbled in the market. Previous year, Berkshire already had bought the stake of $500 million in Bitcoin in Nubank, months prior to company when it became public in the month of December 2021.

Nubank also announced that Berkshire investment in Bitcoin had been biggest single investment for fintech bank which had received. On the other hand, Berkshire was also upping the investments in crypto sphere in the year 2021. The company even dropped other, traditional monetary assets. During latest SEC filing which has showed that $1 billion of the investment in Nubank. Where Berkshire even revealed that this had dropped for more than $3 billion in the shares for Mastercard and Visa.

When the conversation turned to crypto, Munger didn’t mince words, saying, “I certainly didn’t invest in crypto. I’m proud of the fact that I avoided it. It’s like some venereal disease.”

Further, Munger went on to list why he doesn’t like Bitcoin. He included extortionists, kidnappers, tax evaders, and terrorists using it. “It’s beneath contempt,” he said.

Speaking of Munger, he is a 98-year-old vice-chairman of Berkshire Hathaway. It is basically the multinational conglomerate run by famed business magnate, investor, philanthropist, and fellow crypto critic Warren Buffett. He explained that he’s happily set in his ways.

He further added that:

“I have all kinds of things I’m not comfortable with,” he said. “I think an old guy is entitled to invest where he wants to invest.”

Moreover, Munger added during the live-streamed event, he added that he wished the United States had banned crypto immediately. He also added that he admires the Chinese for banning it.

Both Buffett and Mungar have had harsh words for cryptocurrency. Even in 2018, Buffet famously called Bitcoin “rat poison squared.”

In addition, during an interview last May, Munger also expresses his own Contempt for bitcoin.

While there is nothing concrete to draw conclusion and it is highly unlikely that the top serial investor would pass any such hints, it is being speculated that because Mr Buffett has invested  $500 million in a Brazilian digital bank which is the parent company of Easynvest, an investment platform that facilitates Bitcoin ETFs. The investment was made by Berkshire Hathaway, a multinational conglomerate of which Warren Buffet is a CEO. Until last year, Warren Buffet was highly unsupportive of digital currencies and had said that “cryptocurrencies basically have no value and they don’t produce anything.”

Berkshire Hathway’s investment is significant as it sends a message that the ice is melting in the most anti-crypto corners of the world of conventional and controlled finance. With Warren Buffet getting onboard the blockchain revolution we can expect to see a dramatically changing fintech landscape.
