Dfinity Announces Internet Computer Smart Contracts Compatibility with Any EVM

Date:

Introduction

The Dfinity Foundation has unveiled a groundbreaking API, enabling Internet Computer (ICP) smart contracts to operate seamlessly with any Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM). This development marks a significant milestone in blockchain interoperability.

Enhancing Cross-Chain Interoperability

Internet Computer smart contracts can now interact with any EVM chain, facilitating decentralized applications (dApps) to leverage cross-chain liquidity. This enhancement merges blockchain communities and simplifies the management of API keys. Lomesh Dutta, Dfinity Foundation’s VP of Growth, highlighted the inclusion of Optimism, Arbitrum, and Base, with the flexibility for users to add other EVMs.

Previous Integrations and Future Plans

The Internet Computer has previously integrated with Bitcoin and Ethereum through projects like Bioniq, Bitfinity, and Omnity. This new API is part of Dfinity’s Chain Fusion initiative, aimed at furthering blockchain interoperability. The Foundation also plans to enable Internet Computer interactions with the Solana blockchain soon.

Dominic Williams’ Vision

Dominic Williams, Dfinity Foundation’s Chief Scientist and Founder, envisions the Internet Computer as a third-generation blockchain capable of ushering in a new internet era. He believes that this advancement will allow all online activities to be conducted on-chain.
