Privacy-Centric Crypto Project DarkFi Unveils Anonymous App Alpha Version

Date:

DarkFi, a privacy-oriented crypto initiative led by pioneer Bitcoin developer Amir Taaki, has launched the alpha version of its much-anticipated app. This release marks another milestone for the group of coders, artists, and technologists who have been diligently working behind the scenes.

Originally teased during a pre-alpha launch last autumn, the app is currently a fully anonymous IRC (internet relay chat). Nonetheless, Taaki envisions it evolving into a useful suite of products. “We’re ready to rapidly expand and add features as we already have elements like the anonymous DAO, the wallet, and the blockchain. They’re all operational, just not yet packaged into a product,” Taaki mentioned in an interview with The Block.

Constructed from scratch, including a unique UI created by Taaki’s team, the app’s messaging feature operates over Tor and is entirely peer-to-peer. “There’s no registration required, no identity verification, and no linkability between messages. It provides the highest level of anonymity,” Taaki explained.

DarkFi’s launch occurs during a period both familiar and unnerving to veteran cryptographers. Taaki, a staunch advocate for freedom who fought against ISIS in Syria in 2015, is deeply disappointed with the trajectory of the crypto industry. According to him, “Cryptocurrency should be about circumventing censorship, just as Satoshi envisioned. But the reality is, cryptocurrencies have been institutionally hijacked due to a lack of anonymity. You can’t bring about change without the offensive use of strong cryptography.”

While Taaki appreciates the neutrality of Ethereum’s tech stack, he stresses the need for a stronger focus on specific use cases. He’s also critical of current consumer tech, saying that apps like Signal Messenger, a potential DarkFi rival, have uninspiring designs.

DarkFi’s ultimate aim is to create technology that is both functional and liberating. Taaki admits that although the alpha version of the product is “not polished,” it’s a crucial step in getting their vision out there.
